Meet Venks

This is Venkata Subramaniam Swamy. But we call him Venks. He's an ownerless mongrel that hangs around near a cemetary about 10 minutes away from our office. He is really beautiful for a stray, as you can see. He looks regal and dignified. I seriously contemplated taking him home with me and adopting him at some point but he's too old and he's too wild it just wasn't feasible.

We swipe food from the cafeteria and go down and feed him once in a while. The first time we did that, he ate heartily and barked at us ceaselessly after he was done. He was always wary, looked at us with distrustful eyes, stand at a distance and refuse to come closer. Only when we put the food down and moved away would he move closer.

But yesterday, I didn't even see him but he bounded and leaped out from behind a truck when he saw me, all excited. He found me! I didn't have to stand there and coax him with food. I was so thrilled to see him yesterday.

We wanted to name him and Sohna thought he looks like a wolf so should be called Wolverine or Logan, but we decided Logan's too human a name. I wanted Mungojerry but again it was decided that it's derogatory for a dog to be named after a cat. Shirley came up with his current name. We all love it, he's a South Indian dog, and should have a South Indian name.

I can't wait for the day he'll let us pet him!

mac - I'm just wondering what the management would think of all that food that went to stray dogs, would that make them proud or would I get a big warning for squandering company money? Anyway, Venks was always like this, way before I started feeding him.

Another stray lover!

:)

Guess what we did last month? We adopted two Indian breed (strays). Three actually, but the third one is with our neighbor. They are too freaking cute and spoilt and clever! One really senti post about stray dogs coming up soon on my blog. lolz.

But trust me, adopting puppies, strays or pedigrees, is no cake walk! Its a lifetime commitment, and so far, I think I'm making a good parent.

Awwww! I love that name!

We used to have quite a few 'visiting' dogs at our home in mysore. There was one half stray and half alsatian who used to come regularly for a snack. After a long gap she came one fine day to introduce her little puppies to us. Two very healthy little ones!

My mom had named her 'subbi' short for 'subbalakshmi' :)

All power to you - my fellow dog-lover :)

Btw, would you mind if I add you to my blog list? It's not very convenient for me to have to visit other sites to view your blog.

jinx - go right ahead, I should add you too as I also have to go to other sites/my comments to get to your page! :)

Well, I don't think I have a single snap of Subbi or her puppies. I was not that much into photgraphy then...
